Parenting seems to introduce a lot of different levels of censorship. Each being introduced as your child gets older.
At first its your social life. All traces of which are thrown out the window in the early years. Evenings out become scarce and are rationed according to time willing babysitters may allow you. There is still a curfew though. Suddenly instilled again after a 15 years gap from when you were a teen.
Then there’s the taking over of your television. Documentaries, sitcoms, and any movies over the PG rating is replaced by CBeebies, Nick Junior and that bloomin Peppa Pig.
Then comes the censoring of your radio as you realise that 90% of even radio edit songs sound SO wrong out of a 3 year olds mouth. You contemplate whether it is your time to switch over to BBC Radio 4, you would prefer death by CBeebies songs or just drive in total silence and have Little Z do acoustic versions of Jingle Bells in April.
As Little Z gets older and his speech and understanding of his world develops, so does a new level of censorship in our house. That of conversation. And any household bickering. He has entered the stage of absorbing key phrases and sentences in about a nanosecond and then, of course, repeating them at the most inappropriate of times. Usually in front of family and friends. Sometimes to the Tesco and takeaway delivery man and occasionally to people passing by.
We have stood squirming, sometimes nervously laughing and mostly denying all understanding of when Little Z has blurted out nicknames only used in the house to people we know or when he has revealed that we are going on holiday before we’ve told anyone ourselves.
In the last week the takeaway delivery man has been given an impromptu 20 second account of how Daddys car was “broken” when he had his windscreen shield fixed, the family have been told how we are going on holiday because, in his words, “I NEED a holiday” and random people have been told about how his cousin brought him a camel. (Toy, not real).
Then one day last week I was greeted by my slightly bemused Dad who had been entertaining Little Z during one of my work days. During one of their many conversations Little Z had randomly shouted:
“You promised you’d clean the bathroom!!”
Of course I had no idea where he could have possibly got that from. Umm. Obviously.
Hehe so funny they are at such a cute age. Mads the other day shouted at the top of her lungs ‘Murderer’ when I was putting her in her car seat. I was shocked and wondering where on earth she got that from until Mr E pointed out that Mr Potato head says it on toy story. You literally never know what is going to come out of their mouths next! X

LoL We are very careful on what we say and do in front of our 7 yo – we once over heard a group of them in school conversing about how Mom was upset with Dad that he had to sleep outside the room. hahahaha

Made me laugh! It’s so true. It’s amazing when you look at the world through their eyes and realise how much of it is unsuitable.
However, my daughter has been singing ‘Sex bomb’ all week after seeing it on BGT, but she’s not saying the right words – she’s singing ‘set one’. Cute.

So funny what they pick up on from you and from television. We are now finding censorship quite a difficult one with teens and tweens and plenty of inappropriate language mainly from TV rather than us flying around our house making me cross! #MagicMoments

My husband love to turn the radio on while driving even when son is there so my son grew up loving radio music too. Needless to say that a lot of the sonmgs (if not all) are not kid friendly. Its a good thing that he can only mumble words and he is using words that are not really songs lyrics =P
It is amazing how much we dont realized our influence on our kids but they really do get our words & actions.
nice post! thought provoking =)

Ha, that made me laugh! It doesn’t get any better – my 8 year old was singing a song about Minecraft the other day which is actually about ‘freaking creepers’ but came out (innocently) as something much ruder – he had no idea why I was so horrified! #magicmoments

Tee hee, you’ve got a funny little fella on your hands. Reminds me of my 2yo: “absolutely not” when she doesn’t want to do something, or “add them to the shopping mamma” because we ran out of grapes. They really are little sponges, and censorship is absolutely necessary 😉

Haha, Little Z is hilarious as always! Seriously, the censorship can be crazy at times, so apart from the cartoon channels, we only watch Nat Geo, that too with caution. Sigh.

Lol this is great and I can totally imagine it happening, The censorship of TV and radio happened such a long time ago now that I barely remember what it was like before! With his slightly late speech we have yet to have our words repeated back to us, though I know it is only a matter of time! xx #magicmoments

Soooo tricky isn’t it. I thought I was doing ok till the 3 year old was ‘playing driving’ sitting in the front seat of my car and starting saying ‘oh god, oh god, oh god’ over and over again. Wonder who he got that off?! Great post. Spot on.

Okay, I am almost choking trying not to laugh out loud and wake up the little people in the next room! That is brilliant! And very recognisable… I have to be very careful now what lies I tell the Boy to explain the unexplainable as they will inevitably be repeated to his teachers and people at the check out in LIDL.

My big little has started to look at her bare wrist as though it’s a watch and say it’s 4 o clock?! I don’t even have a watch. They pick up so much she also loves pretend ironing…like Grandma!! Yup, she never she’s me doing that- such a rubbish housewife! X
