As Little Z is starting to show a passion for kicking a football at pretty much everything, the Other Half has found a little weekend footy club especially for little ones, aged 3 and above. It sounds pretty good. It’s run by one of the coaches of an actual footy team in some kind of league (I know nothing about football). I did get to enjoy all the videos of Little Zs antics on his first session though. At the age of 3, he’s the youngest there and looks like he very much enjoyed making his own rules up.
So this is, apparently, how to play football, aged 3.
1. Take great delight in playing “fox” and “rabbits”, a drill session where they chase a designated “rabbit”).
2. Run directly to Daddy when it’s your turn to play the rabbit as you get chased by a roaring fox.
3. Attempt to shove bib down shorts when coach instructs it should be worn (as required in the drill sessions).
4. Concentrate on coach’s instructions for about 3 seconds before getting up and sprinting in some random direction.
5. Spend half of the training session scooped up under the coach’s armpit as he brings you back to the pitch.
6. Love kicking the football every which way, even when instructed to stop.
7. Take a break mid game and jump over the line of cones. Just for fun.
8. Practice how to dive. A lot! Sometimes just drop spontaneously even if there’s been no other human contact. Laugh hilariously.
9. Ask to drink a Fruit shoot every 5 minutes.
10. Shout “You can’t catch me!” and leg it as soon as it’s time to vacate the sports hall.

Sounds like great fun! Think next time you may end up just taking a ball to the park 🙂 x

Hilarious! This had me in stitches…partly because I recognised a lot of it, only it wasn’t football it was ballet.
How coaches have the patience beats me!

Oh cute. So funny, I could imagine this would be just like N would be if he went along. They do ball skills at nursery so a mix of kicking throwing and the like

Ha ha that made me smile and reminded me of L at this age who was a real challenge to actually get to play football. It sounds like he is enjoying it though and if he is anything like my lot, football will probably become an obsession.

How lovely! It sounds the perfect way to start 🙂 My son did a little pre-school football thing when he’d just turned 4. He did it for the whole of his pre-school year and loved it. It looked an awful lot like this sounds!
It’s incredible how quickly they learn skills and discipline and the difference in them from one year to the next.

My 4 year old has been going to football classes for over a year now and still thinks that if you’re in goal you have to let the ball go through your legs then cheer, just like she’s seen the grown ups do..! Oops!
Brilliant fun! It is fairly similar with the under 5s group at Ben’s rugby club … with added mud 🙂 #madmidweekbloghop

Our eldest daughter tried football for a bit. It didn’t work out, she wasn’t really a fan…which suited me because I can’t stand the game (odd for a man, I know!). Looks like you’re having more success than we did. Hope he keeps at it.

Oh bless him! We took Luka when he was three and he loved it but the sessions were just poorly timed. 5.30-6.30 on a wednesday night with a newborn- not a good combination! He used to get so tired that we cut his session to just half an hour then decided to wait til he was older. Looks like Z has a real interest for it though!
