A better bedtime routine with Johnson & Johnson – What bedtime is like now

We’re going to be working with Johnson & Johnson over the next couple of weeks to try and put a bit more structure and calm around Baby E’s bedtime.

Our current bedtime and challenges

Baby E has just hit the 5 month mark and I can safely say that we still don’t have much of a structured bedtime for him. Late evening is when he is absolutely full of beans. I think if he could literally bounce off the walls then he’d happily do it. It’s very very cute to see him squeal excitedly at everything. He thinks Daddy is hilarious and he will flap happily at every lame joke or dance move made. Eventually, he does tire himself out and tends to go to sleep for the night around 11pm and sleeps really well. Most of the time he does, very thankfully, sleep through the night and won’t wake till 8am. We really have been blessed with a good sleeper but it’s that wind down bit which we’re not very good at. (Of course having written this down, he is now entering the pesky wake-alot teething phase!).

It’s not unusual for Baby E to look like this at 10pm each evening!

Little Z has school and has a bedtime of 7.30pm. This does stretch on a bit with countless requests for stories but eventually, he too, sleeps. That is, until a very happy Baby E squeals very loudly downstairs and wakes him. At first, Little Z wanted to be involved in the all the fun too. He’ll now settle back to sleep which is great. It would be a lot better if Baby E’s bedtime synched up with his a lot more. That way everyone is getting a much more rested night.

What we’ll be doing over the next two weeks

Over the next two weeks we will be keeping a record of evening routines and trialling Johnson & Johnson bedtime products with the hope of bringing forward bedtime a bit more. I know it can be difficult to budge a baby’s sleeping pattern and I’m aware not to expect a 7pm miracle baby sleeper. I do hope, however, to make the evenings a lot calmer using a combination of Johnson & Johnson products and changing a few things that we currently do.

Our aim:

Introduce evening massages for baby. We currently do this on and off with him and he does love it but it’s always been a daytime thing and something that’s sporadically done. I don’t mean to start an epic routine of massaging but a mini massage straight after bathtime may help the wind down.

Using Johnson & Johnson bathtime products. We used these a lot with Z when he was little but have so far not used anything much on Es skin. It’ll be interesting to see if they have the same effect on him (hopefully a bit of a sleepy one!).

Less fooling about in the evenings. It’s hard to not join in the fun when a baby is squealing happily but I think we do need to impose a bit of a curfew on ourselves so as not to wake our older boy.

Bringing forward sleepy time. I’m not going to give myself a hard 7pm target just yet but anything earlier than 11pm would be great.

Come back in a couple of weeks when I will be blogging about how the two weeks went, whether there have been significant improvements and hopefully that we have a much more rested household.
